“When ALGOR FEA showed parts wouldn't fail, we immediately built them. We were able to design and build the entire car within nine months.”
     George Coppens
     Saginaw Valley State University

Saginaw Valley State University used ALGOR software and improved their car’s performance for the Formula SAE® Competition at the Pontiac Silverdome in Pontiac, Michigan.

“From [ALGOR] analyses, we’ve been able to determine where to reinforce the chassis and ways to make it stronger. Our goal is to build a rigid, strong, safe car.”

David H. Livingston Jr.
     Vanderbilt University

An ALGOR static stress analysis with linear material models performed on this beam model of Vanderbilt University’s Formula SAE race car chassis showed team members where bracing should be added in the design.

Formula SAE Competition Grant Recipients:

As a sponsor of the Formula SAE competition, ALGOR provides finite element analysis (FEA) and Mechanical Event Simulation (MES) software grants to participating organizations. MES combines large-scale motion and stress analysis and includes linear and nonlinear material models. Through these grants, participants can design their entries with the same software used by over 20,000 customers worldwide.

We are always pleased to consider supporting participants in these and other competitions. If you are interested in receiving a software grant, please contact us for more information.

Benefits and Support

Software Features

  • FEMPRO, a complete and easy-to-use finite element modeling, results evaluation and presentation interface that features docking toolbars, multiple view windows, a tree view of model parts and associated data, Windows-native data input screens with real-time data checking for reasonable input and right-click functionality for applying, modifying and deleting loads, constraints and FEA properties
  • InCAD technology for direct CAD/CAE data exchange with Alibre Design, Autodesk Inventor, Inovate, IronCAD, KeyCreator, Mechanical Desktop, Pro/ENGINEER, Rhinoceros, Solid Edge and SolidWorks; full associativity for each design change with most CAD solid modelers; support for CAD universal files including 3-D solid models in the ACIS, IGES, STEP and STL file formats, and 2- and 3-D wireframe geometry
  • built-in precision FEA model-building capabilities with structured meshing tools for building designs from scratch and refining CAD designs
  • a wide range of simulation capabilities includes static stress and Mechanical Event Simulation (MES) with linear and nonlinear material models, linear dynamics, fatigue, steady-state and transient heat transfer, steady and unsteady fluid flow, electrostatics, full multiphysics and piping
  • internationalized language support allowing easy selection of the language of choice, including Chinese (simplified), English, French, German, Italian and Spanish

About the Formula SAE Competition

The Formula SAE competition is for SAE student members to conceive, design, fabricate and compete with small formula-style racing cars. The restrictions on the car frame and engine are limited so that the knowledge, creativity and imagination of the students are challenged. The cars are built with a team effort over a period of about one year and are taken to the annual competition for judging and comparison with approximately 120 other vehicles from colleges and universities throughout the world. The end result is a great experience for young engineers in a meaningful engineering project as well as the opportunity of working in a dedicated team effort.
