ALGOR, Inc World's Fastest Motorcycle Designed with ALGOR FEA Software

"After 17 years, we finally did it," said Joe Harralson of Sierra Design Engineering in Mount Aukum, California, reflecting on his work with BUB Enterprises of Grass Valley, California to design and build the world's fastest motorcycle. On September 5, 2006, during the 2006 International Motorcycle Speed Trials at the Bonneville Salt Flats near Wendover, Utah, Harralson watched as the BUB team's streamliner, named "Seven", (which looks more like a rocket on two wheels than a traditional street bike) was driven by multi-time American Motorcyclist Association champion Chris Carr to a new world record speed of 350.884 mph. For Harralson and the BUB team, it was the culmination of a decades-long odyssey that included budgetary battles, daunting technological challenges and intense competition in relentless pursuit of a speed record that had stood for over 15 years.

Harralson used finite element analysis (FEA) software from ALGOR, Inc. of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to analyze several key components of the streamliner including the engine crankshaft, frame, rear suspension swing arm and wheels. "ALGOR FEA was an invaluable tool in this project," said Harralson. "At almost every step, we were in unexplored territory, and the ability to analyze stress and deflection was essential."

ALGOR, Inc ALGOR FEA Software Helps Researcher Learn about Function of Sinuses in Vertebrates

Andrew Farke is a Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Anatomical Sciences at Stony Brook University in Stony Brook, New York. As part of his doctoral dissertation research, Farke is investigating the function of sinuses in vertebrate animals. In particular, given the existence of data on horned animals, he is interested in the presence of sinuses in Capra hircus, the domesticated goat. Farke used ALGOR FEA software to analyze the effects of strain on the brainpans of goat skulls. Testing a commonly held, but essentially untested, hypothesis that sinuses act as shock absorbers for the brains of horned, head-butting vertebrates, the FEA results led Farke to conclude that, to the contrary, the presence of sinuses in the skulls of horned vertebrates have little to do with shock absorption and, in fact, may actually weaken the skull roof and increase strain within the cranium.

"ALGOR made it possible. Without ALGOR, I would never have been able to study the role of sinuses in domestic goats nor gain insights about their function in other vertebrates. Given its CAD compatibility and portability, ALGOR is an essential research tool. I will continue to use it for my dissertation research and beyond."
